This week’s top tips and current promotions

As we head towards Easter, many of the supermarket's spring promotions are underway. Below is a round-up of offers across the major retailers. You will also find this week's top tips – a bargain Spanish red from Aldi and a delicate and clean Sainsbury's Verdicchio.

2019 Taste the Difference Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi (£6 – instead of £7 until 23 March – at Sainsbury’s)

A wet May followed by two scorchingly hot months, helped make 2019 a great vintage for Central Italy – as this gentle white testifies.

Delicate with a nutty edge, it brings us clean tasting quince, apple and peach flavours with firm grapefruit and sherbet acidity and green herb influences too.

Be quick if you want to try it at the discounted price, the offer ends tomorrow.

Grapevine Shiraz (£4.69 in Scottish branches of Aldi but cheaper where minimum unit pricing does not apply)

If you demand substantial texture in your wine then I fear this may not be exactly the guy for you.

Fans of light, bright, fruit elements, however, will love this bargain priced Spanish red’s bold, sweet-edged, raspberry, red cherry and baking spice flavours but, I repeat, only very modest texture.

At Sainsbury's

The current promotion at Sainsbury's ends tomorrow (23 March). This Italian fizz is worth picking up if you're looking for an alternative to Prosecco this spring:

Hello Brian, I just read your recommendation of the Portuguese red wine at Iceland less than £6 from Casa Santos Lima. I recently tried another of their wines called LAB which is sold by Waitrose and it was far too sweet and jammy for me. I can’t imagine anyone recommending that one unless they want an alternative to Coca Cola or Red Bull!
I think the Shiraz in the final blend is what tips it over the edge. Does the Rabo do Galo have any Shiraz in it?

Hi Geoffrey and thanks for getting in touch – always nice to hear from people reading the site. The varieties in that wine are Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo anywhere else) and Trincadeira. As you imply, residual sugar levels are going up in some red wines – the success of Apothic is probably part of the reason. Equally though chefs are also finding that a bit of extra sweetness works well with certain of their dishes so that may be a factor too. I don’t know the exact RS on that Iceland red but my taste buds tell me it was nothing to speak of – so I hope it works for you … Best …. Brian
