This week’s top tips and current promotions

My supermarket stars this week include a fruity organic red and a soft, textured chardonnay. Scroll down and you'll also find details of new offers at Waitrose, Spar and the Co-op.

2017 Pacheco Organic Monastrell (£6.99 until 5 May – at Waitrose and 14.5%):

It is good to see this excellent organic red back on promotion. From Jumilla in Spain, it uses the sun-loving Monastrell grape (or Mourvedre as it's called elsewhere in the world).

Find it here on the Waitrose website

It's an intense, robust wine with fresh, minty and clove influenced cherry, mulberry and plum fruit.

2018 Exquisite Collection Padthaway Chardonnay (£5.99 at Aldi and 13.5%):

Padthaway may be one of the less familiar parts of South Australia but its Chardonnay is fast acquiring a great reputation. This soft and textured example shows us why.

Find it on Aldi's website

With a smooth apple and grapefruit baseline, firm acidity and delightful suggestions of butter, vanilla and other spices.

Dave Cronin

Morning Brian, can’t let this opportunity pass without praising the Pacheco Organic Monastrell, I first tasted this back in July 2019 and at the time it was probably one of my bargains of the year and now at £6.99 incredible value, from in my opinion a underestimated region of Spain.
Think it has a dash of Syrah in it as well, it’s a fairly dense muscular wine full of rich baked plums, berries and even a touch of violets. yes, it is robust with a weighty feel about it and it definitely delivers a punch but still very drinkable with or without food.
Well done for highlighting it,

Brian Elliott

Glad you like it too, Dave – especially given your expertise with Spanish wines. As you suggest, Jumilla has had its problems so it is good to see some of its wines getting their day in the sun.
