This week’s top tips and current promotions
Below you will find my two wine picks of the week plus details of offers at Morrisons, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. You'll also find a special promotion from the Wine Barn which is supporting an excellent cause.
2018 Morrisons Malbec (£5 at Morrisons and 13%):

Ahead of World Malbec Day on Friday, I’d like to draw attention to this basic Argentinian Malbec which, I think, is one of the best value reds on the High Street.
From San Juan, Mendoza’s hot and dry neighbour to the north, it centres around raspberry, plum and blueberry fruit with chocolate and baking spice depth, good acidity and a twist of tannin.
2018 Vale dos Pombos Vinho Verde (£6 at the Co-op and 9.5%):

As the days get longer and the weather brighter, our thoughts turn to light wines that are perfect for outdoor drinking.
This refreshing Portuguese white is exactly that. With fresh pear drop and red apple flavours, a spike of grapefruit acidity and just a hint of sweetness.

At the Wine Barn
To celebrate their 20th anniversary, Winchester-based wine merchant Wine Barn are donating £10 from the sale of every Celebration Case to Age UK.
They have also put together a Stay Home, Stay Safe mixed case which can be delivered within 2-3 days. Something to consider for self-isolators.
We'll be back on Thursday with a comparison of Pinot Noir at three different price points.

Thank you for this Brian, as ever. Would that I was going to risk a supermarket visit, that I’m not, the Morrison’s Malbec sounds like a winner to me at nought but a fiver. Currently I’m a Sainsbury’s preferential most vulnerable wrinkly so I get first dibs on delivery slots once every week. Indulging regularly in the Nina Roja at £5.50 but Wednesday sees us taking delivery of that very good cheap Fitou they have. Best for now ….Eddie
Hi Eddie and good to hear from you as ever. I fear that conventional supermarket shopping may be a little way off yet but I guess that malbec will wait for you for a while. Be interested to hear how that Fitou works. The area does seem to be a bit of a rising star (with some excellent producers) but it is odd to have an appellation divided in two like that.
