This week’s top tips and current promotions

Read on to find details of an excellent – but modestly priced – Viognier and a great value Cabernet Sauvignon currently on offer at Morrisons.

2019 Abbotts & Delaunay Viognier (from £7.99 in Majestic)

I've stretched the usual price range a bit here but Abbotts and Delaunay make some lovely Languedoc wine, often – like this one – with a modest price tag given the quality.

Enjoy the aromatic orange, mango and apricot flavours supported by lemon-centred acidity and a savoury texture.

Note, some Majestic outlets may still be on the 2018 vintage at the moment.

2019 Fairtrade Cabernet Sauvignon (£5.50 – instead of £7.25 until 4 October at Morrisons):

This aromatic and well-priced South African wine centres around bright raspberry and blackcurrant fruit but is mercifully light on tannin.

It has good acidity but the impressive mint, clove and chocolate depth adds a welcome texture and complexity.

Current promotions

At Sainsbury's

The Sainsbury’s promotion we featured a week or so back comes to an end tomorrow but a new set of offers start on Wednesday. Tune in next week for my highlights from this promotion plus news of fresh offers at M&S.

And finally….

We were pleased to hear this week that we have made it on to York-based Corking Wines' list of Top 101 Wine Writers of 2020.

Corking Wine founders, David Beswick and Yvonne Holmes, shared these kind words about MidWeek Wines:

“Brian's bitesize roundups of the best bottles on the market are giving thousands of wine lovers a highly valuable insight into the latest trends and unmissable offers.”

Cheers guys! That’s exactly what we try to do so it’s great to know we're hitting the spot.

Join us again on Thursday for a brief review of South African wine including fare from one especially impressive producer.

Good to hear that you’re appreciated

Brian Elliott

It was re-assuring to be in the illustrious company of some names that head the list and full marks to Corking Wines for the painstaking task of assembling the list.

Nigel

I’ve tried others….. Yours works best for me. Many thanks.

Brian Elliott

Really glad to hear that, Nigel, and appeciate your taking the time to say so.

Paul Rummery

Well done young man. Onwards and upwards.
Paul

Brian Elliott

Thanks, Paul, and really good to hear from you. However, the message about “onward and upward” does not seem to have reached our mutual football team yet!

Nigel

Congratulations on the well deserved recognition Brian. Well done

Brian Elliott

Much appreciated and, as I said to the other Nigel, it is gratifying not only that the site works for you but that you have taken the trouble to say so; many thanks.

Edward Walker

Well done Brian …I’ll endorse Corking Wines opinion on that too!
Eddie.

Brian Elliott

Thanks Eddie – really appreciate your kind words and, of course, your readiness to add comments to the site which is a great help in providing more information to everyone.

Chris Scott

Well done Brian, well deserved. See they highly rated your prosecco article. Never read it myself as i live with Prosecco-pedia!!!! So following this will we be seeing an Amazon documentary in due course??

Brian Elliott

Thanks Chris. Does your domestic prosecco guru have any thoughts on the rosé prosecco which is expected to hit the streets in January now the Italian authorities have given the project the nod. No Amazon documentary is prospect as there are no plans to ditch the current management structure in favour of someone “special”

David Cronin

Well done Brian , well deserved, in my opinion you should have been further up the rankings

Brian Elliott

Thanks Dave … Quite happy to sit in a mid table position given some of the superstars on the list.
