This week I bring you a slightly extended top tips section that includes my highlights from Lidl’s latest Wine Tour. There are 30 or so wines included but these are the ones that grabbed my attention. All are available at Lidl stores while stock last.
2019 Riesling Feinherb (£6.49):
This light and fresh Riesling from Germany’s Pfalz region has an engaging acidic prickle with accompanying grapefruit zestiness while its ripe pear and sweet-edged apple flavours add considerable depth and versatility.
2019 Malbec Gran Reserva (£6.99)
Over the Andes from Mendoza, we can still find presentable Malbec like this one from Chile’s Rapel Valley. It brings us full, dense and smooth red wine with raspberry and plum flavours, good acidity, firm tannin and suggestions of cinnamon and sage.
2019 Syrah Reserva Privada (£6.49):
Although perhaps half a point behind the Malbec recommended above, this Syrah (Shiraz) still offers enjoyable blackberry, cherry and loganberry flavours with good acidity, limited tannin and hints of clove, chocolate and vanilla.
2018 Medici Riccardi Chianti Rufina (£7.99):
This Italian classic puts its smooth black cherry and red currant flavours centre stage. There are also rounded marjoram and baking spice components and good acidity but surprisingly gentle tannin.
2019 Outlook Bay Marlborough Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (£8.49):
As you ascend the price ladder, classier Sauvignons begin to emerge as demonstrated by this aromatic but still well-priced version. It delivers crisp but rounded pink grapefruit acidity, intense but ripe peach style depth and a grassy background.
