Two top supermarket bottles for £6

The last of the summer whites and a bold, dark cherry red.

This week’s top tips include a perfect Portuguese white to enjoy the final days of summer, and a rich, bold red to welcome the autumn. Read on and you’ll also find the usual round up of supermarket offers and promotions.

2020 Vale de Pombos Vinho Verde (£6 at the Co-op)

For probably the “last of the summer whites”, let’s head south for a classic gentle and undemanding Portuguese option.

Light with a subdued use of those customary Vinho Verde bubbles, this has refreshing apple and pink grapefruit flavours supplemented by good acidity and a subtle herbal finish that also contains floral elements.

2020 Porcupine Ridge Syrah (£5.99 – instead of £8.49 until 21 September – at Waitrose)

Here is another dependable, good value wine produced under South Africa’s Porcupine Ridge label.

Bold and rich, it delivers bramble and dark cherry flavours embellished by bright acidity but accompanied by touches of vanilla and sweeter spices and, for contrast, an underlying earthiness as well.
