Two shining stars that punch above their price point

A classic New Zealand Sauvignon and a fashionable Italian red

This week’s good value buys take us from Southern Italy to New Zealand’s South Island.

The pictures below should help you spot the wines on busy supermarket shelves.

2019 Finest Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (£8 at Tesco and 12.5%):

While not especially cheap, this is an exceptionally good example of Marlborough Sauvignon containing enough ripeness and sweetness to position it a rung or two up the quality ladder.

Nevertheless, it still has classic Sauvignon ingredients including aromatic pear and green apple fruit along with grassy, grapefruit acidity.

2018 Wine Atlas Negroamaro (£6 at Asda and 14%):

This sensational Italian red from Puglia uses Negroamaro – an increasingly fashionable grape that is no longer just reserved for blending.

This great value solo version delivers rich, cherry and bramble fruit with satisfying acidity and hints of liquorice, baking spice and chocolate yet pleasingly soft tannin.

We’ll be back on Monday with highlights from the latest Sainsbury’s promotion and details of new offers at the Co-op.
