Two reliable Italian favourites

A classic white and a crowd-pleasing red.

My top tips this week include a classic Umbrian white and a crowd-pleasing red from the Abruzzo hills – both around £6. And my regular round-up of supermarket offers includes more good value bottles, this time from Asda, Morrisons, M&S and Majestic.

2018 Orvieto Classico (£6 at the Co-op)

With dozens of ancient caves, Umbria’s Orvieto city was historically a great place to produce quality, matured wine. Even today, its wines can be a bit special like this attractively dry version from the region’s original (Classico) vineyards.

It is an uncomplicated but nicely rounded white wine providing floral, apple and pear flavours with suggestions of mint and nuts built into its savoury finish but with refreshing acidity too.

2018 Finest Montepulciano D’Abruzzo (£6 – instead of £7 for Tesco Clubcard holders)

Montepulciano grapes are a reliable source of sound “middle of the road” Italian red wine, and this is a particularly good illustration of why it ticks boxes for so many people.

Aromatic and soft, it delivers medium bodied cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant flavours coupled with good acidity (but gentle tannin) and traces of cocoa, aniseed and liquorice.

The current promotion at Morrisons is running until next week. This red, which we enjoyed in an earlier vintage, is included among the discounts:

Don’t forget, the 25% off Definition wines offer finishes today at Majestic but do note, the discount is only valid in parts of the UK where multi-buys are permitted. This one was our highlight:

At other retailers

Offers continue this week at Sainsbury’s (featured in last week’s round up) and at Waitrose and the Co-op (you can find more details in my previous post here).

A new offer starts this week at Lidl. Look out for Thursday’s post where we pick our best buys from the promotion.

  1. Just picked up on Tesco running at 25% off buy-6 so that M. d’Abruzzo comes in at at £4.50!!! What’s not to like along with some of their Nero D’Avola? Any recommendation for a Tesco rose Brian? Cheers for now ..

  2. Thanks for the 25% off alert Eddie – I do miss some of them when they surface. I quite like Mud House Sauvignon Blanc Rose and I hear good reports of Studio By Miraval Mediterranean Rosé. Both come within range for those that can take advantage of this discount.
