Two great bottles under £6
Here’s my (now regular) Friday round-up of good value High Street wines in time for the weekend.
The pictures should help you spot the wines in question in a crowded aisle.
2019 Exquisite Sud De France Rosé (£5.99 at Aldi and 12.5%):

Not an obvious companion for cold, dark evenings but pink wines can work well with wintertime foods too. Especially dishes with prawn or prosciutto.
This delicate rosé from Languedoc is made by Jean Claude Mas using grenache, cinsault and syrah grapes.
Find it here on the Aldi website
Light in texture with red cherry fruit, crab apple and zesty pomegranate, it has good tangerine acidity balanced by sweeter spices.
Tip: Make sure you get the 2019. A few stores are still stocking the previous vintage.
2019 Tesco Argentinian Malbec (£5 at Tesco and 13%):

This great value option from Argentina’s Mendoza region is an excellent, everyday Malbec.
Medium bodied and aromatic, it has smooth raspberry, damson and blueberry fruit with pronounced acidity, touches of cocoa and mint, mineral depth and a neat twist of tannin.

Brian, I’ve only recently started receiving your mid-week wine emails and am enjoying the suggestions, a bit poor really given I’ve been seeing (Spanish) Dave Cronin’s Vinoviews for awhile and his comments often link in with your comments. A question, when you recommend a wine you evidently must taste it. Does that mean you have, literally, lots of bottles ‘on the go’ (if you follow) at a given time? Just to say, I’d struggle to consume that amount of wine over a week / weekend. How do you do it?
Hi Keith and welcome aboard. You are right, Dave and I do work quite closely together since we have broadly similar tastes. As for tasting, yes nothing is ever recommended that has not been tasted and that does mean sampling hundreds of wines a year. However, most are opened, the content sampled and documented but the remainder of the bottle given away – we have some very happy neighbours! Trying to drink it all would indeed give me a major problem.
