Three supermarket stars and two 25% off promotions

This week, two Buy 6 and save 25% promotions offer shoppers extra savings on a range of supermarket favourites. See below for details plus other offers currently running at the major retailers. I also bring you three top tips – a refreshing Picpoul, a rich Merlot blend and a smooth Portuguese red, with extra savings for Scottish shoppers.

2020 Pomerols Picpoul de Pinet (£7 – instead of £8 until 27 June – in Morrisons but £5.25 in Scotland)

I praised the 2019 version of this wine back in March but, thanks to another brilliant harvest, the new vintage of this lovely white from a special corner of Languedoc is every bit as good.

Vaguely saline but with energetic and refreshing acidity, it contains rich orchard fruit flavours embellished with lively, tangy lemon centred depth.

2020 The Scarlet Pimpernel Red (£6 – instead of £7 until 29 June – at the Co-op)

This excellent South African red is made by the environmentally sensitive Mount Rozier Estate and skilfully combines Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.

Floral and dark in colour, it has assertive red currant, cherry and prune flavours with fresh acidity, limited tannin and traces of cinnamon, mint and savoury herbs.

2019 Cidade Branca Alentejo (£6.50 – instead of £8 until 27 June – at Morrisons but £5.25 in Scotland)

As you can see from the Picpoul, Morrisons are helping to soften the effects of minimum unit pricing limitations with one or two substantial “Scotland only” discounts and this enjoyable Portuguese red blend (involving Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Nacional ) is another beneficiary.

Soft and smooth, it has rich cherry and loganberry flavours supported by good acidity, mild tannin and suggestions of cinnamon, vanilla and savoury herbs.

At Sainsbury's

A new promotion started last week at Sainsbury's which runs alongside their popular Buy 6 and save 25% offer (on until 24 June). Previous vintages of this red have been great so it's one to look for among the savings.

• Les Calcaires Pinot Noir (Down from £7 to £6 until 6 July)

At Asda

This aromatic and mellow low alcohol Sauvignon is among the current offers at Asda. There is no fixed expiry date for the promotion but discounts are expected to last for the next three to four weeks.

• Brancott Flight Sauvignon Blanc (Drops from £8.50 to £6.50)

At Waitrose

A reminder that the current promotion at Waitrose finishes tomorrow. Save up to 1/3 on selected wines including this Italian red:

• Sagrato Chianti Riserva (Down from £10.79 to £6.99 until 22 June)

At Morrisons

There is also a Buy 6 and save 25% on all wines over £5 promotion at Morrisons (running until Sunday 27 June) which offers some great savings including on my Top Tips mentioned above.
