My wine highlights this week include a South African Sauvignon down to £5 at the Co-op, and a reliable Italian red on offer at M&S. I have also included links to the current wine promotions at many of the big retailers plus a reminder of the Bank Holiday savings that end today.
2020 Irresistible Fairtrade Sauvignon Blanc (£5 – instead of £6 until 8 June – at the Co-op)
Marlborough Sauvignon always seems confidently assertive while versions from the Loire in France often appear restrained and understated but South African Sauvignon like this sits in the middle being neither shouty nor excessively shy.
Grassy and with pithy depth, this version contains soft greengage and grapefruit flavours with minty texture and zingy, lingering lime acidity.
2019 Primitivo Puglia (£6 – instead of £7 until 7 June – at M&S)
Primitivo grapes (called Zinfandel in California) regularly offer reliable, great value Italian red wine, and this is no exception.
Smooth and rounded, it contains ripe cherry and loganberry flavours partnered by invigorating acidity and orange peel zing with touches of menthol and baking spice but only limited tannin.
