Two Good Value High Street Picks

Two bottles worth seeking out among the current wine promotions.

Continuing my Friday round-up of good value wines from the High Street, here are two bottles worth seeking out among the current promotions.

The pictures should help you spot the wines in question in a crowded aisle.

2019 Taste the Difference Coolwater Bay Sauvignon Blanc (£7 – instead of £8 until 14 February – at Sainsbury’s and 12.5%):

This zesty sauvignon from New Zealand’s Marlborough region outpointed a well-known branded version in my tasting, possibly because of its broad flavour range.

Find it here on Sainsbury’s website

Pale in colour but assertive in freshness, it has minty white peach and gooseberry fruit with plenty of grapefruit pith zestiness.

2018 Sorso Nero D’Avola (Two for £10 – or £5.25 a bottle in Scotland – instead of £6.75 each, until 18 February – at Morrisons and 13%):

Nero D’Avola is another reliable grape from Italy – actually Sicily here – that usually combines good value with nicely balanced and tasty wine.

Find it here on Morrison’s website.

Rounded and medium bodied, this has cherry, red plum and mulberry fruit with good acidity and limited tannin but cinnamon, liquorice and even mineral depth.

We’ll be back on Monday with details of new offers and promotions launching in time for Valentine’s Day.
