This week’s top tips and current promotions

A grassy but delicate Sauvignon and a great value Cote du Rhone.

If you’re stocking up ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend, read on for two good value supermarket buys – a delicate French Sauvignon on offer at Waitrose and a £5 Tesco Cote du Rhone. I have also included details of the supermarket promotions continuing and ending this week.

2019 Atlantique Sauvignon Blanc (£6.29 – instead of £8.49 instore until 4 May – at Waitrose)

Wines bearing the “Vin de France” classification can use grapes grown in more than one specific geographic location.

That flexibility has paved the way for wines like this grassy but delicate Sauvignon that contains pithy lime, melon, peach and red apple flavours with tangerine acidity and a savoury, herbal background.

2019 Cotes du Rhone (£5 at Tesco)

Enjoy the great value this Rhone Valley “entry point” red represents. It is less full bodied than many Rhones but amply compensates with other components.

Soft and lightly textured, it has aromatic, oregano influenced plum and cherry flavours supported by good acidity, balanced tannin and suggestions of baking spice.

Current promotions

At Asda

Asda’s ‘2 for £10’ offer continues this week. This red, which we recommended a week or so ago, is included in the promotion:

At Co-op

Don’t forget the current discounts at the Co-op end tomorrow. This Malbec is worth snapping up if it’s on offer at your local store.

At Sainsbury’s

The current promotion is on at Sainsbury’s for another week, ending on 3 May. My spies tell me there is also a ‘Buy 6 and save 25%’ offer coming this week but do check the Sainsbury’s website before heading out in case my sources are mistaken! Promotion now confirmed – details here

At other retailers

Offers also continue at most other retailers this week. Details of the discounts at Majestic and M&S can be found in last week’s round up, and my highlights from the Morrisons and Waitrose promotions here.

Our Sunday Best feature returns on Thursday when we review a selection of slightly more expensive wines perfect for special occasions.
