This week’s top tips and current promotions

Recommendations this week include a ripe and textured Australian red and a reliable, great value Montepulciano. I have also included my picks from the current supermarket promotions plus a reminder of the offers ending this week.

2020 Andrew Peace Shiraz (£5.50 at the Co-op)

While South Australia remains that country’s main wine region, Victoria can offer varied and tasty wines too.

Stock up on this kindly priced, ripe and textured red from that region with its soft damson and blackcurrant flavours, chocolate, cinnamon and savoury edged depth and good acidity but limited tannin.

2018 Sorso Montepulciano D’Abruzzo (£4.99 – instead of £6.75 until 16 February – at Morrisons)

Deservedly, the Montepulciano grape variety is the “safe option” among Italian restaurant wines – usually reliable, enjoyable and good value.

Much the same applies in the retail world as illustrated by this soft, well-priced, cherry and bramble-influenced red with good acidity and tannin within its sage and clove background.

Current promotions

At Sainsbury's

A new promotion started last week at Sainsbury's and is expected to run until 2 March. My highlight from among the offers is:

At Asda

Asda's current ‘2 for £9' and Rollback offers continue this week. One Rollback offer worth looking out for is:

At Co-op

The Co-op's main wine promotion also continues this week, alongside a few Valentine's Day discounts. Prices and availability can differ across the country so check your local store to see what's included in the offers. One to snap up, if they stock it:

  • Ramon Bilbao El Viaje Rosé (Down to £7 until 23 February)

At other retailers

A final call for current promotions at Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose. Tesco offers end today, and discounts at Morrisons and Waitrose end tomorrow.

This Thursday’s post looks at winners from the recent People’s Choice Drinks Awards – the competition where “ordinary” wine drinkers, not just “experts”, play a key role in the selection process.

Tim Morris

Hi Brian,
So glad you mentioned the Andrew Peace Shiraz – had you recommended it before? We bought a bottle last summer and enjoyed it so much that we went straight back to the Co-op and got half a dozen more. What struck us was the smoothness: it satisfies my taste as someone who likes a flavoured red but also met my good lady’s palate who prefers a non-tannic and fruitier wine. It is areal snip for the price.

Well spotted Tim – I did indeed recommend the previous vintage in the press in June last year. As you say, great value wine and ideal as undemanding straight forward red wine for informal drinking.
