This week’s top tips and a future promotion

Bodacious and unexpected, two words that not only describe this week's top tips but are, in fact, how you will identify them on the supermarket shelf. Scroll down and you will also find details of Tesco's current promotion, a significant savings alert just for subscribers, and links to our new Marketplace introduced in last Thursday's post.

2019 Bodacious Branco (£8 at Asda):

Asda's Bodacious Red (which I enjoyed back in September) has sold so well it now has a white counterpart. Both are from Portugal’s Tejo region, an area that has seen a leap in quality in recent years.

Although a little above the usual top tip price point, this is well worth seeking out. It delivers aromatic pear and greengage fruit with lime acidity, spicy depth, a hint of sweetness and a long, clean finish.

2019 The Unexpected Red (£6.75 at the Co-op)

Embellishing a possibly predictable blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Tempranillo, Italy’s little-known dark and dense Sangrantino grape brings the Unexpected to this Australian red.

Its smooth plum, cherry and mulberry fruit has good acidity and a savoury backbone but (unexpectedly, again) soft tannin.

Hi Brian
Bodacious looks and sounds interesting, do you happen know what the white blend is?
I’ve tasted the Unexpected red and for the price it’s a pretty good wine, as you say lots of bright acidity, lots of dark fruit, maybe a little on the jammy side, which may appeal to some. Think the Co op stocks other Andrew Peace wines as well but I haven’t tried them.

Fernao Pires 50%; Fernao Pires sur lie 20%; Verdelho 20%; Arinto 5%; Moscatel 5%.

Thanks Brian
Quiet a heady blend, will check it out next time i’m in Asda
