This week’s top supermarket picks

An eco-white and a reliable red.

My top tips this week include a fruity Chardonnay in a flat bottle and a reliable Abruzzo Montepulciano. Read on for the usual round-up of offers and discounts – including new promotions at three of the big supermarkets.

2020 Banrock Station Sustainable Bottle Chardonnay (£6.50 – instead of £7.50 until 28 September – at the Co-op)

Reflecting today’s ecological priorities, this Australian white comes in a flat bottle (of letter box dimensions) made from sustainable materials.

Its contents bring us smooth peach, ripe melon and apple flavours with suggestions of toffee and vanilla captured within its creamy texture and all ably supported by grapefruit acidity.

2020 Extra Special Montepulciano D’Abruzzo (currently £5.50 on a rollback at Asda)

This typically reliable example illustrates exactly why Abruzzo Montepulciano is often deemed the “safe” choice among Italian wines.

Fruit forward with hints of sweetness, this version delivers soft cherry and strawberry flavours accompanied here by good acidity (but mild tannin) and traces of aniseed and more savoury constituents as well.

Current offers and promotions

At Sainsbury’s

As well as a Buy 6 save 25% offer which is running until 2 October, a new set of discounts started last week at Sainsbury’s. This Portuguese Alvarinho is among the offers and worth a try if you like Spanish versions. Note, offers are only applicable in some stores and, usually, not Sainsbury’s convenience stores. The reductions are not always available online.

  • Taste the Difference Portuguese Alvarinho (Drops to £6.75 until 12 October)

At Morrisons

A new promotion is also underway at Morrisons. Look out for this bottle which made it onto our great value Malbec list back in April. Check your local store for availability and note, not all reductions are available online.

  • Beefsteak Club Mendoza Malbec (Down to £5.50 until 12 October in participating stores)

At Waitrose

Another new promotion started at Waitrose last week. This vibrant red which we recommended back in March, is among the offers:

At Majestic

Shifting the focus of their discounts from Sauvignon to Chardonnay, Majestic are offering up to 25% off selected bottles until 4 October. See their website for more details.

At other retailers

Don’t forget offers at M&S and the Co-op finish this week, you’ll find my picks from the promotions here. The current promotion at Asda continues for another week. See here for details and my highlight.

In our next post on Thursday, we look at the wines included in Lidl’s latest Wine Tour.
