This week’s go-to wines

This week's top tips come from Sainsbury's SO Organic range and Asda's Extra Special collection. Read on for details of a tasty South African Cabernet and a textured Spanish Rueda – both great value bottles. Plus a heads up on the supermarket promotions ending this week.

2020 SO Organic Cabernet Sauvignon (£5.75 – instead of £6.50 until 31 August – at Sainsburys)

This sound and tasty South African red forms part of Sainsbury’s (SO) organic range and is sulphur free.

It delivers ripe, juicy, dark cherry and blackcurrant flavours with evolving acidic freshness (but muted tannins) supported by cocoa, cedar and coffee bean richness to counterbalance its pronounced fruit forward style.

2020 Extra Special Rueda (£5.50 at Asda):

Spain’s Rueda region, northwest of Madrid, is white wine country and specialises in the often underestimated (and, many feel, Sauvignon-like) Verdejo.

Subtle yet with textured substance, this example has stylish pear, peach and other stone fruit flavours combined with crisp acidity and suggestions of fennel that add savoury contrast.

The current promotion at Morrisons ends tomorrow. This highly regarded Portuguese red is among the discounts:

At Waitrose

At Co-op

A new promotion launched last week at the Co-op and is expected to run until early September. Here's my highlight among the offers:

At other retailers

Promotions at Sainsbury's and M&S continue until the end of the month. See last week's Top Tips post for details.

Hi Brian. With an Asda 25% off buy 6 that Rueda becomes silly money for such quality. I spotted it last December and thought WOW! £5.50? So I’ve always had bottles on the shelf. It really is a very good buy not just for the money. As a stand alone white that isn’t SB, Chardonnay PG etc. I love it. Cheers …

In his excellent book “Grapes & Wines”, Oz Clarke speaks about Verdejo based grapes from Rueda being “crunchy” when young but becoming “nutty and honeyed” with a little age. At those prices, there is little risk from buying some to see whether he is right. (Hint – when it comes to tasting, Oz is seldom wrong!)

John

That Asda Rueda was recommended elsewhere so I followed it up and enjoyed it. Topped up with 3 more yesterday of that and 3 of the feteascu regala. There were gaps elsewhere on the shelves but not for those 2.

Good options John – glad I am not alone in rating that Rueda – and that Romanian option is terrific value for money …. Best … Brian
