Supermarket deals to round off the year

A classic party red and a mellow New Zealand white.

In my last top tips and promotions round up of 2021, I bring you details of a classic party red for around £5 plus a great value, mellow New Zealand white. You’ll also find reminders of the supermarket deals running – and ending – this week.

2020 Terrenal Tempranillo (£5.50 at M&S)

Here is a classic party season red from Spain that will fit into most budgets.

Undemanding with modest texture, the wine nevertheless contains lots of Tempranillo based attractions via its herbal cherry, walnut and nutmeg flavours, bright acidity (but firm tannin) and hints of cedar, cocoa and slate savouriness.

2020 Aupouri Sauvignon Blanc (£6.50 at Asda)

This Sauvignon is from New Zealand’s Gisborne region and, therefore, less piercing than many Marlborough equivalents – and well worth £6.50.

Mellow and grassy, it brings us grapefruit and ripe melon flavours supported by an opening sweetness that quickly gives way to a fresh lime acidity and a minty herbal depth.
