From Sainsbury’s limited edition range to Asda’s rollback deals, this week’s top tips include two good value, enjoyable wines – a soft and textured Chenin Blanc and a light but juicy Rioja. I also bring you news of fresh promotions at Waitrose and Co-op and a reminder of offers currently running at the other major retailers.
2021 Extra Special Chenin Blanc (currently £5.50 – on a Rollback from £6.50 – at Asda)
Although the slightly warmer climate of South Africa’s Paarl region suits red wines nicely, the area also produces enjoyable but inexpensive whites like this.
Soft and textured, it provides attractive apple and white peach flavours supported by delicate savouriness, grapefruit and lime acidity and contrasting traces of green pepper and nutmeg.
2020 El Domador del Fuego Rioja (£6 – instead of £7 until 23 November – at Sainsbury’s)
Here is one of several “when it’s gone, it’s gone” parcels Sainsbury’s have just introduced.
While this great value option may be light on some of the deeper classic Rioja characteristics, it more than compensates with juicy cherry flavours coupled with underlying coconut, vanilla and chocolate elements plus hints of sweetness and spice.

Oh Brian! Super find that El Donador I have to say! I thought at its price point that as a versatile mid week bottle it works as well as anything Ive recently drunk. So enjoyable and happy to have a £1 off. I overheard a wine aisle worker saying 25% off buy 6 was coming back at the end of the month! If that is correct and this Rioja doesnt disappear off the shelf we can have it for £5.25 … Let’s hope it’s there to buy if and when that happens. Lovely stuff. Best now …
I think the Domador is great value at £6 even at £7 it’s still good, a soft Rioja but still delivering heaps of flavour, good to stock up with and would make an ideal house wine.
Glad it works for you Eddie and pleased it is not too light and too “entry-point, new worldy” for you. The sister white is a decent bottle too.
Agreed, I sense that long-haul Rioja aficionados would raise eyebrows at its limited texture, but that style seems the mode currently and it does increase the wine’s versatility and broadens its appeal.
