Two supermarket stars, both from South Africa.

South Africa’s wine trade is hard hit at the moment but, as we see here, its winemakers are still producing lovely wine across several price points. Watch out, too, for a new MidWeek Wines venture that I think many of you will enjoy.

A lovely Languedoc Viognier and a great value Cabernet Sauvignon.

It is often revealing to see how wines from the same producer differ as they ascend the price ladder – especially with the large players in the game. Today we do this with McGuigan’s chardonnay.

A stand-out Pinotage for less than £5 and a juicy Chenin Blanc.

Today’s “Sunday Best” selection has something for most tastes – from a delightful Macon white to a New Zealand Riesling and from fabulous Languedoc red to great value Madeira.

An aromatic Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s North Island and a smooth organic Italian red.

Next month sees the shooting season start in earnest but game is not the only food that works with Rhȏne wine – and those wines don’t have to be expensive.

A revived Italian white and an intensely fruity Australian red are among my supermarket stars this week.
