My latest stars from the supermarket shelves

For this week's top supermarket buys we head to M&S and Tesco for a classic but unpretentious Orvieto and a rare budget Bordeaux. I also bring news of fresh promotions at Sainsbury's and Morrisons plus reminders of the offers ending this week – including some residual Black Friday deals.

2020 Tesco Claret (£5 at Tesco)

Tesco maintains excellent links with Bordeaux’s wine folk and, consequently, can often source the region’s (rare) budget level but undemanding reds like this Merlot.

Medium bodied and subtly herbal, it brings us damson, strawberry and cherry flavours supported by firm tannin and good acidity coupled with traces of vanilla and aniseed.

2020 Orvieto (£6 at M&S)

Based on its centuries old wine making traditions, Umbria’s Orvieto region is particularly good at producing unpretentious, inexpensive white wine like this.

Pale in colour but rich to the taste buds, it contains apple, melon and pear flavours supplemented by citrus acidity, an edge of sweetness and suggestions of lemon curd.

Current offers and promotions

At Sainsbury's

A new promotion at Sainsbury's includes this Prosecco which is in Magnums making it a good option for Christmas events. It's also included in the Buy 6 and save 25% deal if delivered by 1 December (where applicable).

At Morrisons

New offers at Morrisons are running until the new year, including this pink fizz now revealed as the current number one Prosecco Rosé brand in the UK. Check instore for availability.

  • Kylie Minogue Prosecco Rosé (Drops to £9 until 1 January)

At Majestic

Some Black Friday deals end today at Majestic so hurry to their website for savings up to 40% off when you ‘mix six' and 25% off fine wines.

At other retailers

Current offers at Waitrose and the Co-op end tomorrow, see here for details. The promotion at Asda continues for another couple of weeks, find details plus my highlight here.

The second window on our “MidWeek Wines Mini Advent Calendar” opens this Thursday to reveal my red wine recommendations for Christmas.

Morning Brian. I did a review myself for cuveereserve chat group on the Tesco Claret back in July 2020. There were two different vintages on the shelf then, the ’18 and the ’19. The older one had it by a short head. You could tell the difference by looking at the capsules that were different colours. I liked them both at £5 but on a 25% off buy 6 they became a deal that was difficult to ignore. Entry level Bordeaux merlot that was perfectly good drinking midweek where fancy food wasn’t involved. So the 2020 keeps up the standard? I’ll have more …thank you … salut!

As you suggest, Eddie., consistently sound, inexpensive, mid-week drinking. Not words you often associate with Bordeaux are they?

John

Hi Brian, just bought a few bottles of Orvieto from M&S, was on offer at only £4.33! A bargain

A good spot John, I didn’t know it was going on offer but I hope you enjoy it. Although no longer the “go to” Italian white, Orvieto is a lovely (and quite different) option to enjoy as a “House Wine” over the Christmas season.
