Another 25% off deal – this time at Tesco

Several of you have reminded me that Tesco also currently have a “25% off when you buy 6 (mixed) bottles” promotion. It runs through until 24 April.

Do check carefully because exceptions apply (Tesco Express operations and all Scottish stores are two examples and there is a maximum purchase – 36 bottles); others appear as starred items at the foot of a page on the company's website.

I am assured, however, that the reductions do apply to wine already on offer – and, hence, that is where I concentrate.

So, as I did with Sainsbury’s, three prices appear next to each wine. The highest is the list price, the middle one is the current promotion and the lowest is the “double discount” price where this applies.

Here, then, are suggestions I regard as reliable in quality and especially good value during this promotion.

  • Codorniu Cuvee Barcelona Cava (£6.75/£9/£11) – bold lemon acidity charged fizz with tangerine depth.
  • Louis Jadot Macon Blanc Villages (£4.88/£6.50/£8) – classy white Burgundy with smooth lemon and peach fruit.
  • Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc (£5.65/£7.50/£9.50) – crisp, green apple crunch with mango depth.
  • I Heart Pinot Grigio (£3.38/£4.50/£4.90) – light, just off-dry with apricot, apple and satsuma fruit.
  • Nederburg 5600 Pinot Grigio (£3.95/£5.25/£5.75) – mace and ginger undercurrent to its mango and peach ripeness.
  • Trivento Reserve Malbec (£4.50/£6/£8) – damson and cherry fruit with chocolate and all-spice depth.
  • Boschendal 1685 Shiraz (£5.25/£7/£8.50) – dense blackberry and raspberry fruit with touches of chocolate.

For sweet tooth red drinkers

Some of you, I know, are fond of slightly sweeter styles of red – those with residual sugar levels roughly matching so-called “Extra Dry” prosecco. If that is you, there are two examples on this current list – Spain’s plum and cassis centred The Duke (£4.50/£6/£8) is the drier while the mulberry and blackberry based Apothic Red (£6/£8/£9) is from California.

And for whisky

Although not part of the double discount deals, anyone seeking a great value, palatable blend of three sound Speyside whiskies should take a look at Monkey Shoulder (£15 – instead of £27). It is not the most complex whisky ever but it is a presentable, smooth dram for all seasons and, at that price, a steal!

…….can’t see any evidence anywhere of the Monkey Shoulder at any price less than £23 in Tesco? Is this an offer due to happen or have we missed out?

Will check this out with Tesco …….. Best ………… Brian
