Tesco refreshed its promotions a few days ago with its familiar cocktail of fizz, branded wines and 18-20 lines from its Finest* premium brand. They include a great value Spanish red and – to me – one of the best modestly priced Proseccos on the market.

Pinot Grigio with welcome extras
Since the love affair with PG rolls on, look out for slightly more complex versions. For instance, 2014 Nederburg 5600 Pinot Grigio (£5.99 – instead of £7.99) neatly balances the classic light, floral and slightly peachy base with a touch of spice and some much appreciated acidity.
Everyday red that’s far from ordinaire
Great to see Tesco extend the offer on Languedoc’s 2012 Finest* Domaine Aubermesnil Fitou (£5.99 instead of £7.99). There is a herbal backdrop to its plum, cherry and clove flavours and very little tannin to obscure the brightness and subtlety of the fruit.
But Spain fights back
If you prefer your straightforward reds to be medium bodied and Spanish, 2013 Finest* Old Vines Tempranillo (£5 – instead of £6.99) will be for you. Enjoy its cherry and raspberry fruit embellished with cinnamon, almonds and vanilla and given structure with a gentle tannic twist.
So to that fizz
Among all the current Prosecco razzmatazz, I believe that Bisol provides more sparkle for your silver that anyone else. Disbelieve me? Then herald the arrival (allegedly) of spring with the creamy texture, green apple acidity and apricot centred complexity of Finest* Bisol Prosecco (£6.99 – instead of £8.99)
