A good value South African red and a surprising Italian white

A well-made Pinotage and a textured Pinot Grigio blend.

This week’s top tips include a rich and substantial South African Pinotage and a textured Pinot Grigio blend, both at £6. And my weekly round-up of offers and promotions brings you more good value buys from the major retailers plus a great tip-off from Majestic.

2019 Finest Stellenbosch Pinotage (£6 for Clubcard holders – instead of £7.50 until 25 October – at Tesco)

Special care is needed when buying Pinotage as the skill of the winemaker is absolutely crucial and quality can vary appreciably but this one passes all tests comfortably and is great value at the discounted price.

Rich and substantial (14% alcohol), it provides us with slightly sweet cherry and dark plum flavours coupled with fine tannin, chocolate and toasted coffee elements and just a hint of seared oak.

2020 Garganega Pinot Grigio (£6 – instead of £7 until 1 November – at M&S)

This Italian white surprised me because the Garganega grape is seldom a star performer, but this blend with Pinot Grigio works amazingly well.

Textured and with sharp grapefruit acidity, it brings us pear, orange and melon flavours combined with spicy sweetness yet contains rosemary and almond based savouriness too.

Current offers and promotions

At Sainsbury’s

The recently launched promotion at Sainsbury’s includes this Sauvignon which I also picked out in this recent post. If you can find the 2021 version of this wine, snap it up:

At Morrisons

Another new promotion is underway at Morrisons. Look out for this good value smooth, plum and blackberry centred red:

At Asda

As well as a ‘Buy 6 and Save 25%’ offer starting today, you’ll find Rollback discounts on wines across the range at Asda (expected to run until the beginning of November). This rich red, which we included in our round-up of good-value Malbec back in April, is among the offers:

At Waitrose

A new set of offers also started last week at Waitrose. This reliable South African red blend is great value at just under £6:

At Majestic

Majestic’s Top wines at £9.99 offer is due to end today but I am told that their widely acclaimed LB7 Red 2019, Lisbon is currently £5.99 instore and online (while stocks last).

At Co-op

The current promotion at the Co-op also ends this week. This red is a good value buy if it’s available in your local store:

  • McGuigan Black Label Shiraz (Down to £6 until 19 October)

At other retailers

Offers at M&S continue to the end of the month. See this previous post for my pick from the promotion. Tesco are also offering ‘3 for £20‘ deals on selected wines for Clubcard holders (where multibuys are allowed) until 25 October.

Join us on Thursday when the spotlight again falls on Discounter Discoveries, this time with Aldi.
