A smooth Rioja Crianza and a textured Languedoc Blanc.

This week we say hola to a great Rioja Crianza which is on offer at Morrisons until tomorrow. I have also linked to a great value white Languedoc (and its red counterpart) and other highlights from promotions ending tomorrow at the big retailers.

2017 The Best Marques De Los Rios Rioja Crianza (£6.50 – instead of £7.50 until 27 July – at Morrisons)

This is great Rioja (made in conjunction with Bodega Eguia) that demonstrates the benefits of the two years aging the Crianza classification requires.

Satin smooth, it delivers bramble and sour cherry flavours accompanied by good acidity but soft tannin inside a mellow texture containing clove, fudge and mace touches.

2019 Taste the Difference Languedoc Blanc (£6.50 instead of £7.50 until 27 July – at Sainsbury’s)

Modern Languedoc winemakers often adapt styles from elsewhere in France. This white gives two Rhone Valley stalwarts (Marsanne and white Grenache) a distinctly Languedoc twist by combining them with Vermentino.

Rounded and textured, the result provides melon and tropical fruit flavours with lively grapefruit acidity and hints of nuts, citrus pith and savoury herbs.

Current offers and promotions

At Sainsbury’s

The red version of my Languedoc top tip above is also among the offers at Sainsbury which end tomorrow:

At Morrisons

The current promotion at Morrisons also comes to an end tomorrow. This is my highlight:

At Waitrose

The third of four supermarket promotions finishing tomorrow. This juicy Italian red from Waitrose is my top buy among the discounts:

At Co-op

And to the final promotion which is ending tomorrow. This superb white is well worth a go if it’s on offer in your local Co-op store:

Our Under the Radar feature is back on Thursday, this time looking at the seriously underestimated grape Mourvedre.

  1. Brian,
In my option the best value wine at the moment is Finca Las Moras, Malbec. This Argentinian wine is available from Tesco’s at the moment for £5, down from £6, plus 25% off for 6 or more!
    Need I say more.
    Roger.

  2. Indeed – no need to say more Roger. That version – and the same producer’s Barrel Select the Co-op have on offer today and tomorrow – are both excellent examples of modern malbec with good depth and clear-cut flavours. Thanks for pointing it out. Is not the £5 price at Tesco just for Clubcard holders though? … Brian

  3. Hi Brian, apart from the big hitters (although not always the case) good quality cheaper Rioja’s are harder to find but they are out there and this ‘Marqués Los Rios’ for the price, from the reliable Eguia is, as you say pretty decent. Big shout out for their White Rioja as well, which is stunning, if a little more pricier.

  4. I am with you on the White Rioja, Dave. Viura (which takes the lead here) is not always the easiest grape to get to shine but it has been hugely successful in this case – and currently on promotion at £6.50 I believe.
